Things to do in Maui

Beaches and Snorkeling

You are currently located on Charley Young Beach (aka the north side of Kamaole One beach park). There is a in depth description of Maui's beaches in the next section of the book, followed by a description of recognized snorkelling spots. There is pretty good snorkelling at the rocky point to the north side of the complex.

Scuba Diving

My sister is an avid diver these are her comments.

Surf Lessons

Cove Park (Kalama Park) is located a short block to the north. This is where everyone learns to surf.

Maui Waveriders – is the most popular, and is located across from Cove Park, but take a walk and ask around the trucks and you will probably get a better deal.

Hiking

There are several books in on the bookshelf in the bedroom that discuss hiking in Maui.

Golf

Maui Nui Golf Club – Located in Kihei off the Piilani Hwy #31. A good course if you want to golf for a reasonable price.

Local Transport

BUS STOPS AND TIMETABLES
Although available, Maui bus is a service used typically by the locals to commute to work. If you are interested check out their routes at mauicounty.gov

CAB/TAXI

Turtle Tracks for a fun ride in a large communal golf cart. Call 808-866-9979.
Uber and Lyft operate in Maui as well.

MOTORCYCLE/ MOPED RENTALS
Maui Scooter Shack – .75 miles north next to Shaka Pizza
Kihei Moped and Hula Hogs – .5 miles north behind the 76 gas station
Aloha Motor Sports/Eagle Rider – .5 miles south

Where's the Nearest?

AIRPORT
Kahului is likely the airport you arrived at. It is the International Airport. However Hawaiian Airlines also flies out of a small airport in Kapalua on the north-west side of the Island. Just be careful you book the right one.

BANK / ATM
You will find that most of the mainland banks do not have branches in Hawaii. Not to worry, there is no shortage of ATMs. If you do require a bank our closest is the First Hawaiian Bank on Lipoa, right off South Kihei Road.

GAS STATIONS
Texaco is just a block south of the condo.

CONVENIENCE STORE
Although we have our share of 7-11s, the Hawaiian go to is the ABC Store. There is a large one located one block south of the condo. It is attached to the Texaco.

GROCERY STORE
Kahului has Costco, Whole Foods, and Down to Earth.
Kihei has three principle grocery stores. Safeway can be found in the Piilani Shopping Centre. It is located on the Piilani Hwy at Pikea St. About a mile north of us is the Times Supermarket and the Foodland. These are more "local" stores. They stock most of the usual fare with sprinkle of local favourites. The Hawaiian Moon is the local health food shopping store. It has the basics and is located two blocks south across the street. Hawaii also encourages everyone to use recyclable bags. You will find several inside the green cooler bag at the front door. You will find farmers markets scattered throughout the Island. If you are looking for the best variety of local fruit, this would your most promising opportunity. The closest farmers market to us is located just over a mile north of us, near Boss Frogs. Currently it runs Wed and Sat.

LIQUOR STORE
In Hawaii liquor can be purchased at the grocery store, or many of the corner stores including the ABC Store. Be sure to pick up some local beer, rum, or vodka!

MEDICAL FACILITIES
The closest Urgent Care Clinic is located 1.7 miles north of the condo on the corner of Kihei and Lipoa. Their number is 808-664-1454 The closest full hospital is the Maui Memorial Medical Centre is located in Wailuku. (the town attached to Kahului) It is located at 221 Mahalani, Wailuku. They are open 24 Hours and have an Emergency Room. IF NECESSARY, CALL 911. However, the emergency room phone number is 808-244-9056.
The nearest dentist is Hawaii Family Dental. They are located about ½ mile north of the condominium at 1847 South Kihei Road (across from Kalama Park). Their number is 808-856-4625.

PHARMACIES
The closest full pharmacy is Longs Drugs. It is located about two miles north of us at 1215 South Kihei Road.

POLICE STATION
The Kihei Police station is 1.2 mile away at 2201 Pillani Hwy. If you go north turn right down Kanai (the corner of Cove Park). If you go south turn left at Alanui ke Ali'I.

POST OFFICE
The closest post office is 2 miles north at Azeka Makai Mall. 1254 South Kihei Road.

FITNESS CENTRE
Maui Powerhouse Gym is located about 2 miles north in the AZEKA Shopping Centre.
South Maui Fitness (a 24 hour gym) is located at 95 Lipoa St. It too is located about 2 miles north. Lipoa is the street before the AZEKA mall. Turn right (away from the ocean) at the lights.

YOGA STUDIO
Maui Yoga Loft is located in the mall just north of Foodland at 1847 South Kihei Road.
Maui Beach Yoga – Is located in Kihei, however locations vary. Please call 808-385-6466 to see what is available.
Maui Path Yoga – is located about a mile south on the back side of the Mani Kai Resort. It is an indoor studio; however, they do occasionally have classes on the grass.

SPORT EQUIPMENT RENTALS
Boss Frog's is a block to the south across the street. There are often deals in the guide books. They rent bikes too.
Auntie Snorkel – In the same mall as Café O Lei. Our kids really like to rent SUP's etc here. Often best price is on their website.
South Maui Bicycles – Located across from Cove Park.
